چکیده

Source of diatomaceous earth (DE), insect species, grain moisture content, temperature, method of application and duration of exposure were all factors that in ̄uenced the mortality of stored-product insects. In all tests, regardless of the insect species, or source of DE, the lower the moisture content of grain, the greater the mortality. DEs from di€erent geographical locations had di€erent ecacies. The ranking of the di€erent DEs remained similar at di€erent moisture±temperature combinations. However, the mortality response with respect to moisture content did change among DEs from di€erent sources for Sitophilus oryzae (L.), but not for Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). Of all the insects tested, Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) was the most sensitive to DE. Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) and S. oryzae were more tolerant than C. ferrugineus. Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) and T. castaneum were the most tolerant species tested. Applying DE as a dust was more e€ective than applying DE as an aqueous spray. For C. ferrugineus, lower temperatures reduced DE ecacy. The opposite was true for T. castaneum, as lower temperatures increased ecacy for most DEs tested. For S. oryzae some DEs had increased ecacy with lower temperatures and others had decreased ecacy with lower temperatures. # 1999 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Maize grain of hybrid AN 447 was: (a) infested with Sitophilus zeamais and infected with Aspergillus chevalieri; (b) infested with S. zeamais; (c) infected with A. chevalieri; and (d) grain free of insects and fungus (control); the treatments were stored for 30 days at 268C and 15% moisture content, under hermetic and non-hermetic conditions to monitor the oxygen concentration, insect mortality...

Equilibrium moisture contents of starch-based foods were determined at nine levels of relative humidity ranging from 10% to 98%, using a static desiccator technique. From the water adsorption isotherms, the critical moisture contents (% dry basis), i.e. the moisture contents to be maintained at 258C that will not allow fungal growth were found to be 13.0% for rice grains, 12.9% for glutinous ri...

Yam rots caused by fungal pathogens (mostly Fusarium spp.) are a major cause of storage losses, and previous work has shown that fungal lesions were only found if there was pre-existing physical damage to the tuber. The general perception is that damage in ̄icted in the ®eld prior to storage is far more important in this regard than damage caused during storage, and this has led to much research...

Seeds of various wild and cultivated pulses express varied degrees of resistance to damage by Callosobruchus maculatus, a major pest of stored pulses. Seeds were analysed for trypsin/chymotrypsin inhibitors (qualitatively and quantitatively) and protein pro®les (SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) to study the chemical basis of resistance to bruchid infestation. Seeds of the wild pulses Dun...

In this work, a boundary element model of an underwater landslide is developed. Careful gridding and time stepping techniques are demonstrated that produce highly accurate simulation results based on conservation of volume. A sensitivity analysis shows how to optimize simulation accuracy. The general techniques demonstrated herein are applicable to arbitrary moving submerged bodies. q 1999 Else...
